PaLM API and MakerSuite Additional Terms of Service

Last modified: May 10, 2023

To use PaLM API for Developers (sometimes referred to as Generative Language API) and MakerSuite (including associated developer services, models, and software) (collectively, the "APIs"), you must accept (1) the Google APIs Terms of Service (the "API Terms"), and (2) these PaLM API and MakerSuite Additional Terms of Service (the "Additional Terms").

Age Requirements

You must be 18 years of age or older to use the APIs. Likewise, you may only allow users who are 18 years of age or older to use your integrated websites and applications ("API Clients").

You also may not integrate the APIs with any "Web site or online service directed to children" under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Use Restrictions

The APIs are currently in public preview. At this stage, you may only use the APIs for your personal or internal testing and prototyping within an available region. External or production use is strictly prohibited.

You may not use the APIs to develop models that compete with PaLM API or MakerSuite.

You also may not attempt to extract or replicate the underlying models (e.g., parameter weights).

In addition to the "API Prohibitions " section in the API Terms, you must comply with our Prohibited Use Policy, which provides additional details about appropriate conduct when using the APIs.

The APIs include safety features to block harmful content, such as content that violates our Prohibited Use Policy. You may not attempt to bypass these protective measures or use content that violates the API Terms or these Additional Terms. You should only lower safety settings if necessary and appropriate for your use case. Once the APIs exit the public preview stage, applications with less restrictive safety settings will be subject to Google’s review and approval.

Finally, you may not submit any sensitive (e.g., confidential) or personal information, including names, phone numbers, addresses, emails, or birth dates.

Content License

The license you grant to Google under the "Submission of Content " section in the API Terms also extends to: (1) any content (e.g., prompts) you submit through MakerSuite or any other API interface (e.g., Firebase Extensions), and (2) use of submitted content by Google and its affiliates to provide, improve, and develop products, services, and machine learning technologies.

Disclaimers

  • The APIs use experimental technology and may sometimes provide inaccurate or offensive content that doesn’t represent Google’s views.

  • Use discretion before relying on, publishing, or otherwise using content provided by the APIs.

  • Don't rely on the APIs for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. Any content regarding those topics is provided for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional. Content does not constitute medical treatment or diagnosis.
